On Sunday evening it was clear: Erdogan would win the presidential election in Turkey with 56 percent of the vote and was thus elected Turkey’s 13th president. Turks who lived with us were also able to cast their vote and a total of 74 percent in Austria voted for Erdogan. Shortly after the result, thousands of fans in Vienna-Favoriten took to the streets and loudly celebrated the election victory.
Much to the chagrin of many residents who felt disturbed at night by the enormous noise. Even the police had to move to Reumannplatz around 8:30 p.m. to keep the loud riot at bay. The officials speak of some 100 participants. Several advertisements followed.
Traffic chaos in Vienna
Twitter users write about traffic jams caused by the partying fans in Vienna. With Turkish flags, revelers ran through the streets blocking all traffic. It was also sometimes impossible for public transport and taxis to drive through the neighborhood at night.
Many users also posted videos from last night in Vienna. A mishmash of loud screams, flashing lights and cars that can’t go any further.
After almost all the votes were counted, Erdogan was at 52.1 percent, well ahead of Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who took 47.9 percent. Erdogan sees the result as a mandate to continue his presidency. His challenger, 74-year-old Kilicdaroglu, said the election was the most unfair in years.
