An explosion that took place this Friday at the Saratoga hotel in Old Havana, Cuba, left at least eight dead and 13 missing, as confirmed by the Cuban presidency. The deflagration destroyed several floors of the building, which is very close to the Capitol.
Saratoga Hotel, Five stars, is almost a hundred years old, although the current stadium started in December 2005 when it reopened its doors. It has 96 rooms in total, as stated on the website.
The explosion caused collapse of part of the facade of the building, also affected by a fire that has created a large column of white smoke, visible from much of the city.
The bass, the first and second floor of the building – from six heights – were badly hit by the explosion, with the facade falling over, causing a shower of rubble on the street. The mountain of debris on the sidewalk exceeds a person’s height. The upper floors were also damaged.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was caused by a gas leak.
