Situation “deteriorated” – Moscow evacuates children in the border area with Ukraine

Date:

Russian authorities say they want to evacuate hundreds of children from villages in the region because of increasing attacks in the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine. “Today we start evacuating children from Shebekino and Graivoron districts,” Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of the Belgorod region, told the Telegram online service on Wednesday. Both areas are located in the Belgorod region.

“Today, the first 300 children will be brought to Voronezh,” Gladkov said. Voronezh is located about 250 kilometers northeast and therefore further from the Ukrainian border. The decision was made in light of the “worsening” situation. The state news agency RIA Novosti later reported that buses with about 150 passengers had arrived near Voronezh.

One dead after Ukrainian attack
One person was killed in a Ukrainian attack on a displacement center in the region on Tuesday. According to Gladkov, Schebekino was again attacked and hit by a missile on Wednesday evening. “A lot of damage” was done and four people were injured.

Kremlin spokesman announced measures
The situation in the region is “quite alarming,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in Moscow. There was no condemnation from the West. He announced that “action would be taken”. Also on Wednesday, authorities in the southern Krasnodar region reported that a drone had hit an oil refinery. There were no injuries or damage.

Recently, there have been more attacks on Russian territory. On Tuesday morning, the capital Moscow was hit by an unprecedented drone attack, in which two people were injured, according to local authorities.

Ukrainian militias entered the Belgorod region
Over the past week, armed militias from Ukraine have invaded the Belgorod region and carried out attacks. Since then, several areas near the border have come under heavy mortar and artillery fire, as well as drone strikes.

Five killed in airstrike on Luhansk
An airstrike in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region of Ukraine on Wednesday evening killed at least five people and injured another 19, according to Russian authorities. According to preliminary information, “the bombardment of the village of Karpaty by armed Ukrainian groups” with five killed and 19 wounded was carried out with a US Himar-type missile launcher, Russian security authorities in the region said. Authorities have not said whether the victims were civilians or members of the military.

The Russian army in turn announced on Wednesday that it had destroyed the last major warship of the Ukrainian naval forces. It was destroyed on Monday during a “high-precision strike” by the Russian air force on a berth in the port of Odessa in southern Ukraine. According to the information, the ship is the “Yuri Olefirenko”.

Kiev says it is preparing a major counter-offensive to push back Russian troops in Ukraine.
