Price increases, a slowdown in consumer spending, a drop in orders – the conflict zone is also big for the new head of the Upper Austrian labor market service. A conversation with Iris Schmidt about worries, uncertainty, opportunities – and how her daughter becomes a sparring partner.

A tall Ficus benjamina plant, reaching almost to the ceiling of the room, stands in a red pot in the corner of her office. “It’s been with me my entire AMS life,” says Iris Schmidt. On her second day of work, she had taken the ficus out of the recycling bin in the recreation room. “I had nothing and thought to myself, it doesn’t look that ugly,” she says. Since then, the birch fig has moved everywhere, most recently on May 1 to the headquarters of the Upper Austrian labor market service.
