Heavy rains this weekend led to flooding and landslides in Haiti, killing 15 people. About 13,400 people have left their homes and sought refuge, according to authorities. More than 1200 houses were under water.
Five of the country’s ten departments were hit, including the capital Port-au-Prince. Officials said agriculture was heavily taxed.
The hurricane season has just started in the region – it lasts from June to November. Arlene, the first strong enough tropical cyclone of the season to be named, formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday. It weakened to a storm near the west coast of Cuba on Saturday.
