The search for a robber who robbed a post office in the Swiss municipality of Zizers (canton of Graubünden), not far from the border with Vorarlberg, last July took a bizarre turn. After the investigation had so far yielded no results, an Austrian confessed to the crime.
On Wednesday, July 27, 2022, an employee planned to enter the Zizers Post Office through the staff entrance shortly after 8:00 AM. She was pushed through the door by an unknown hooded man who unnoticed approached her from behind. The man allegedly threatened the woman with a gun and forced her to give him all the money from the till. With several thousand francs in a backpack, the masked man left the post office through the staff entrance in the direction of Kantonsstrasse.
Guilty conscience
An immediate search was just as fruitless as subsequent investigations. But now there was a spectacular turning point. As the police of the canton of Graubünden announced on Wednesday morning, a 22-year-old Austrian living in the canton of St. Gallen turned himself in at the end of May and confessed to the robbery.
debt paid off
According to his statements, he could no longer reconcile the crime with his conscience. With the stolen money he paid back outstanding debts and financed his living expenses. The 22-year-old was taken to the Graubünden cantonal police for further investigation and is now responsible for the judiciary.
