Large-scale firefighting operation in the Tyrolean Oberland: In Fendels (Landeck district), a forest fire broke out on Saturday afternoon under a gondola lift, which eventually spread to an area of 1.5 hectares. The extinguishing work was difficult and had to be stopped at night. The operation continued on Sunday morning.
Shortly before 4:30 p.m., the bushfire broke out under the gondola between supports four and five. A large-scale action by the fire brigade began. “At that time there were no more people in the gondolas. An operations center has been set up near the mountain station in Fendels,” the police said.
Fire brigades from surrounding towns and the mountain rescue service were alerted. In the end, more than 80 emergency services were on the scene. Three firefighting helicopters were also deployed.
Operation interrupted in the evening
The forest fire presented the emergency services with major challenges. “At around 9:30 p.m., the extinguishing work had to be stopped for the time being,” the detectives continue. Finally, another briefing took place on Sunday morning – then the extinguishing work continued.
According to information from the Tyrolean police, an area of about 1.5 hectares was affected by the fire on Sunday morning. No persons were injured. The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
