A Salzburg district inspector and colleagues rushed to help a suspected unconscious person. Feeling disturbed by the police and the rescue service, the homeless Syrian (23) broke the bottom of the eye socket of the police officer with his fist. The verdict for the crime fell on Monday: the man must go to jail for a month. The judge suspended the sentence for another twelve months.

A policewoman from Salzburg (29) ended a routine operation on May 19 with a fracture of the floor of the eye socket. The perpetrator, a homeless Syrian (23), was finally found guilty of serious bodily harm by the Salzburg regional court on Monday.

Police officers rushed to help the supposedly unconscious
When an unconscious person was reported on the radio at the time, the later victim ran into the station area with two colleagues. “Actually, another patrol has taken over the operation. But we were nearby, wanted to help,” the officer recalls. On the spot, the agents turned the later perpetrator into the stable side position. The Syrian soon awoke from the alleged coma. The man had slept off his intoxication on the grass and felt disturbed by the rescue services and the police.” On the way to the ambulance, he looked at me aggressively. When I wanted to leave, it was already too late,” said the officer. A huge fist hit her in the face.

Syrian ended up in cell, officer in hospital
The Syrian ended up in jail, the policewoman in hospital. At first she could barely see – the swelling was also causing problems in her left eye. “I’m still in pain, I have to take seven pills a day,” said the district inspector. A balloon had to be inserted to stabilize the bones. She won’t be able to return to work until July at the earliest.

The perpetrator confessed in court, his lawyer asked for leniency. The Syrian said through the interpreter that he felt threatened. He asked, “What should I have done differently?” The verdict: 13 months partially suspended. But the man only has to stay in jail for a week. Pre-trial detention is counted.
