In the night from Friday to Friday, huge rock masses slid towards the valley near the Swiss city of Brienz. Shortly after the highest blue alarm level was announced, around 01:00, an enormous cracking sound could be heard from the Bröckelberg for several minutes, according to emergency services.
The noise level then decreased. Another big push occurred at 3:47 a.m. Photos show how narrowly the rock avalanche missed the place. “Measurement data and initial image evaluations suggest that much of the ‘island’ above Brienz GR has slipped very quickly,” the authorities confirmed on Twitter.
The spokesman for the municipality of Albula/Alvra in Graubünden, Christian Gartmann, stated that the rock masses from the debris flow had piled up to 12 meters in some cases. According to current knowledge, there are no injuries.
In recent days, stones fell again and again on the Brökelberg. Therefore, traffic was blocked over a large area and the residents of Brienz were evacuated in advance.
