Sold on Darknet – Drug dealer caught in Vienna extradited to US

Date:

Already in November the handcuffs clicked on a Serb (33) in Vienna, now Milomir D. has been handed over to the American authorities – where he faces life imprisonment.

The local authorities quickly realized that D. must be quite a large fish. Because the US government has gone to great lengths to get hold of the 33-year-old. According to the indictment, the Serb – he comes from a small town southeast of Belgrade – is said to have been the founder and operator of the infamous Darknet marketplace called “Monopoly”.

Since 2019, illegal narcotics – from opiates to psychedelics – and prescription drugs have been traded on the platform. Payment was made with cryptocurrency, such as bitcoins.

Tracked down and arrested in Vienna-Fünfhaus
Two years later, the FBI, in collaboration with European partners, located the “Monopoly” server and took it offline. The researchers also gained insight into an online forum connected to the marketplace. The authorities tracked down the Darknet drug lord when he wanted to convert the criminally generated cryptocurrency into proven money. The worldwide search – including for possible accomplices and suppliers – began on a large scale.

On November 2, D. was tracked down in Vienna and eventually arrested in the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district. Investigators from the Federal Criminal Investigation Department found electronic data carriers and cash in his car. “We assist law enforcement agencies worldwide as a strong partner in the fight against crime,” said Andreas Holzer, Director of the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (BK).

The suspect was held in Josefstadt prison until June 23. Now he has “moved” (probably more involuntarily) to Washington DC – where he faces life in prison for drug trafficking and money laundering.
