Wave of animal donations – too big for a handbag: the dog came to the house

Date:

The Styrian animal shelters are sounding the alarm, the capacities are completely exhausted. Hardly a day goes by without a dog, rabbit or cat being donated.

“It’s so bad now that we increasingly have to reject a recording,” says Ingrid Stracke of animal protection “Purzel & Vicky”. In a sense, so-called triage would be applied in animal welfare. “We have to select for urgency, urgency or importance.”

More than 100 animals in June
In June, more than 100 animals were admitted to animal protection and shelter. This is considerably more than in the same period last year. “Yesterday a woman brought two sheep and donated 10 euros because she simply didn’t have any left.” The fact that many people feel the price increase and can no longer afford to care for the animals due to the extra financial burden is one reason for the strong wave of donations. “There are also people who have to move from a house to an apartment and can no longer house horses, goats or chickens.” Since the owners have to say goodbye to their four-legged friends more or less involuntarily, emotional scenes often arise when they are handed over in a playful way. Vicky and Purzel’s team experience such dramas up close.

Not enough seats
Noah’s Ark is currently reaching its breaking point. Every day countless calls come in from pet owners who want to part with their four-legged friends. Recently, eight dogs should have been taken in one day because they are no longer wanted. “We are an animal welfare association and of course we want to help every animal, but we can never offer so many places,” says animal shelter manager Nadine Ferk. About 80 of the spaces had to be made available for official preservation, leaving only 20 percent.

Tax wave due to holiday time
This month, 10 cats and 16 dogs were given up in Noah’s Ark. Unbelievable, but unfortunately true: the love-stricken “Charlie” came to the animal shelter after a year because he was too big for the handbag. The current reason is the holiday period. “Holidays are often a welcome excuse to end livestock farming,” confirms Stracke. She appeals: “It is essential to consider in advance whether you can and want to care for your four-legged friend for the rest of your animal’s life.”
