Because of a suspicious package for the US Supreme Court in Washington DC, the police cordoned off an area around the building. Earlier, numerous protesters had gathered in front of the Supreme Court to protest a decision to take into account the skin color or ethnicity of college applicants.
Congressional staff, who are located near the courthouse, have also been asked to avoid the zone, a reporter said on Twitter. Capitol security forces are assisting police in securing the area.
The Supreme Court previously ruled that the so-called Affirmative Action, which has been common practice for decades, is unconstitutional. This is a promotion of minorities in the country’s universities. With this approach, universities have been trying for decades to improve minority access to universities.
“The student should be treated on the basis of his experience as an individual – not his race,” Conservative Justice John Roberts wrote in his verdict. “Many universities have been doing the exact opposite for far too long. And in doing so, they have wrongly concluded that the touchstone of one’s identity is not the challenges overcome, the skills acquired, or the lessons learned, but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not approve of this decision.”
Asian students felt disadvantaged
In the United States, the term “race” (race) is used to distinguish populations based on their skin color. The ruling concerned lawsuits brought by the student organization Students for Fair Admissions against the elite private university Harvard and the State University of North Carolina (UNC). The claimants argue, among other things, that applicants with Asian roots are disadvantaged by the selection process, which is mainly aimed at African Americans and Latin Americans.
