On Thursday afternoon, riding one of the world’s highest ziplines turned into a nightmare for many tourists in Ecuador. Due to a technical malfunction, almost 80 people had to wait for hours in the narrow gondolas. Rescue workers worked late into the night to free the prisoners, but no injuries were reported.
In Ecuador’s capital Quito, nearly 80 people were trapped for hours in the gondolas of the tourist-popular Pichincha volcano cable car. It only stopped around 4 p.m. The reason for this is according to the mayor Pabel Muñoz, a technical failure.
Rescue operation at a dizzying height
Firefighters worked for hours to abseil the frightened tourists from dizzying heights. In the dark, searchlights were even set up to continue the rescue operation, because initially only about 11 people could be rescued and at midnight some passengers were still trapped in the cramped cabins. Some unfortunates could not be rescued from the gondolas until after 10 am. However, no one was injured in the incident.
No transportation due to security reasons
The 2.5 kilometer cable car in the Andean city of Quito rises from 3100 meters to almost 4000 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest cable cars in the world. However, for safety reasons, the cable car activities are suspended for the time being.
