Shortly after the new problem wolf regulation came into force in Austria, the first animal was killed by hunters in the state of Salzburg on Saturday. The wolf was shot in the area of the Hochkönig and the Steinernes Meer, the state of Salzburg reports in a broadcast.
In the Hochkönig and Steinernes Meer region, more than 30 sheep and lambs have been killed in the past two months. Salzburg State Wolf Commissioner Hubert Stock has monitored compliance with the ordinance.
Further investigations needed
“The wolf was shot within the prescribed area. The evaluation will show us whether it is the problem wolf detected,” explains Stock. The dead animal will be further examined at the Research Institute for Wildlife Science in Vienna.
At the end of June, the state of Salzburg issued an ordinance allowing the legal shooting of two troubled wolves, said to be the cause of countless sheep deaths. “The regulation works and that is important. We are doing everything we can to ensure that the animals on our pastures are safe from problem wolves again,” emphasized Deputy Governor Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) and Agriculture Councilor Josef Schwaiger (ÖVP).
