New offside rule – This revolution is every striker’s dream

Date:

Football has to break new ground in the battle for young fans, spectacles and goals are the hardest currency. Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal cult coach, should push FIFA rules, the Frenchman is relying on a new offside interpretation – which is hotly debated. The strikers get huge benefits, the first tests were promising. FIFA boss Gianni Infantino is already a fan.

The competition comes from all leisure areas – but especially from our own ranks: ex-Barça star Gerard Piqué’s “Kings League” enters the race for young football fans. More show, more action, less running time: “90 minutes is a long time. You have to make short, entertaining content, nowadays the product of football is outdated,” said the former world and European champion.

Twelve teams of former stars, active football players, YouTubers and streamers compete in two halves of 20 minutes each. The game is played on a small field in a 7-a-side format. Recently, 90,000 mainly young fans came to the final at Camp Nou. That makes an impression – radical approaches have long been considered in Europe’s top leagues.

“You have to have open-ended discussions so that there is more attractiveness: bigger goals, bigger penalty area, playing time, flying substitutions,” says Leipzig sports director Max Eberl. Where changes in individual competitions make participation in international competitions more difficult. Why only uniform innovations help – like the new offside rule proposed by Arsenal’s cult coach Arsène Wenger.
