Three hours, 35 people – spokesman confirmed: Putin met Prigozhin in the Kremlin

Date:

Surprising statement from the Kremlin on Monday: According to Vladimir Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian President personally met Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin and other mercenary commanders after the failed uprising. Accordingly, on June 29, five days after the brief uprising, Prigozhin was among 35 people Putin invited to a meeting.

Peskov said, according to Russian news agencies, that Putin made an “assessment” of Wagner’s actions on the battlefield in Ukraine and “the events of June 24” at the June 29 meeting, according to Russian news agencies. According to Peskow, the debate lasted three hours.

West suspects tactical games
Wagner’s representatives had themselves presented their version of events, stressing that they were “loyal supporters and soldiers” of Putin. They are also willing to “keep fighting for their homeland,” Peskow said. Peskow’s statements cannot be verified. Many Western pundits recently suspected that the Kremlin was deliberately trying to play down the events surrounding the Wagner Rebellion.

The events of June 24
On June 24, after accusing Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu of attacking the military camps of his private army, Wagner boss Prigozhin ordered his units to occupy the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and at the same time sent a military column towards Moscow.

During their advance towards the Russian capital, the Wagner forces shot down several helicopters and an airplane; several crew members were killed. In the evening, after negotiations with the Kremlin, during which the ruler Alexander Lukashenko acted as a mediator in Belarus, Prigozhin gave the order to retreat.

Although Putin spoke of “betrayal” during the uprising, the Kremlin later confirmed a compromise, which, however, was conditional on Prigozhin leaving for Belarus. Wagner’s mercenaries would then decide whether to leave the country as well or continue to fight alongside Russia in Ukraine after signing new contracts with the Defense Ministry. Putin also assured the Wagner group of impunity.
