Volodymyr Zelenskyy is stepping up pressure on NATO. He is on his way to the top to demand “respect” for Ukraine. The Ukrainian president openly doubts the alliance’s credible willingness to include his country.
In a long post on Twitter, Zelenskyy complained that he had received signals “that certain formulations are being discussed without Ukraine”. He values his allies in NATO, but now demands “respect”.
“It is unprecedented and absurd that no timetable has been set for Ukraine’s invitation or membership. At the same time, vague phrases about ‘conditions’ are added to the invitation to Ukraine,” Zelensky complained.
He was under the impression “as if they were not ready to invite Ukraine to NATO, nor to make them a member of the alliance.” That would play into the hands of Vladimir Putin. “For Russia, this means motivation to continue its terror.” Uncertainty means weakness, and he wants to speak openly about that at the summit.
Stoltenberg: “Ukraine has come a long way”
A two-day NATO summit in Lithuania began Tuesday with talks on Ukraine and strengthening defenses against Russia. According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Ukraine should receive a clear signal for joining the alliance. However, according to the Lithuanian ambassador to NATO, Ukraine will not receive an invitation to join NATO.
“Ukraine has come a long way,” Stoltenberg said on Tuesday before the start of the NATO summit in Vilnius. The alliance must therefore abandon the otherwise customary Membership Action Plan (MAP) for recruiting accession candidates in the case of Ukraine. “Ukraine is much closer to NATO, so this should also be reflected in NATO’s decisions,” Stoltenberg stressed.
