Forces at the limit – severe storms raged again in Austria

Date:

Heavy thunderstorms swept across the country again on Thursday evening. Numerous sirens were heard in Burgenland, Styria, Upper Austria, Carinthia and Salzburg. The powers are still in continuous use.

Hundreds of firefighters had to leave the country in recent hours due to violent storms. The aftermath of Thursday’s storm is still deep in the bones of emergency services.

The storm has resulted in the removal of some roofs, trees on the roads and extensive flooding Carinthia brought along. To date, nearly 300 storm operations have been completed with a total of 1,400 troops still in the process of clearing operations. “The professional fire brigade of Klagenfurt is now really busy 24 hours and it doesn’t stop there. The new team took over at 07:30, everyone is exhausted!” says Wolfgang Germ, Klagenfurt civil fire and disaster relief.

Also in the evening Upper Austria not spared from the storm. The entire state was hit by heavy rain and wind gusts. Local hailstorms were also reported. In the two hours that followed, the helpers were involved in some 41 storms due to storm damage and flooding. A single-family house in St. Florian near Linz was hit particularly hard, the entire roof of which was torn away by the violent gusts of wind.

Also in Salzburgerland the emergency services were in constant use. The main purpose was to clear traffic routes and cover roofs. The heavy rain caused a flood on the station square in Zell am See.

I am Burgenland between Wednesday 10 p.m. and Thursday morning, about 80 actions by 37 fire brigades were registered. The main task was to remove fallen trees from streets or to pump out cellars.

In the Styria the storm was brief, but all the fiercer. The Pyhrnautobahn (A9) had to be closed southwards at Trieben due to a mudslide. The blockade of the A9 between Trieben and Treglwang (Liezen district) had to be imposed on Wednesday evening: trees had fallen on the highway due to a storm and a mudslide had started, according to highway company Asfinag.

A diversion to Schoberpass Straße (B113) had been set up and this was also necessary on Thursday morning. According to the ÖAMTC, a backlog of about four kilometers had formed in morning traffic. A lightning strike suddenly set the roof truss of a residential building in Höfe on fire.

In Bad Radkersburg in Styria, a circus was completely destroyed on Thursday morning. Trees fell on all the caravans, people fled to the nearby sports field – that there were no injuries (including among the animals) borders on a miracle. The video (above) shows the total devastation.
