A Russian citizen who has lived in Serbia for several years was banned from entering the country on Thursday. Noted anti-war activist Pyotr Nikitin said on his Facebook page that he is currently being held in a Belgrade airport detention center for refusing to fly out of the country.
The 42-year-old posted the Serbian border police’s decision, saying he has been denied entry to carry out an entry ban or deportation. No further justification was given. “There is no explanation other than my anti-war activities within the Russian Democratic Society,” Nikitin wrote on Facebook. The Russian Democratic Association had organized numerous protests in Serbia against the invasion of Ukraine.
Serbia does not support sanctions against Russia
According to Serbian media reports, the official action against the Russian, who has a regular residence permit in Serbia and also has two children there, will go back to the domestic secret service BIA. The US put its boss Aleksandar Vulin on its sanctions list on Tuesday. According to the sanctions notice, Vulin abused his position of power, among other things, to support Russia in destabilizing the Balkan countries.
Along with Belarus, Serbia is the only European country not to support Western sanctions against Russia, even though President Aleksandar Vucic’s government has condemned the invasion. Many Serbs support the Russian attack on Ukraine and there have also been numerous pro-Russian demonstrations in the capital Belgrade.
