Ends Monday – Grain deal for Aus: last ship departs

Date:

Shortly before the expiry of the agreement on the export of grain from Ukraine across the Black Sea, one last ship left the port of Odessa. An eyewitness reported this to Reuters on Sunday. It is also based on data from the MarineTraffic website. The agreement, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, was negotiated in July 2022 and has since been extended several times. If Russia is not ready for another extension, it will expire on Monday.

Russia has repeatedly threatened to do so and attached conditions to an agreement. Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a phone call to his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday that some demands had not yet been met.

Russia criticizes the preference for richer countries
Ukraine and Russia are among the largest grain exporters in the world. After the outbreak of the Russian war against Ukraine, the Black Sea ports for export from Ukraine were initially blocked. The agreement made export possible again. However, Russia criticizes that this would only provide grain to richer countries and not needy countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
