The fire brigades in Greece are battling the flames in a total of 64 regions of the country on Monday. The risk of fire remains high. Although the danger has not yet passed, holidaymakers returning to Austria can breathe again. “We are thankful that we are back safely,” said Matthias H., who returned from his vacation in Athens on Monday.
Athens is not affected by the forest fires. Yet as a tourist you also get a lot on site, Matthias tells krone.tv. You could clearly smell the fire, the air was more gray than blue. “It’s surreal when you consider that these are all tourists like us who just want to have a relaxing time.”
I have been flying to Rhodes almost every year since I was a child, explains a 44-year-old woman who has relatives in Rhodes. “But I’ve never seen anything like it.” She is sure: she no longer flies to Rhodes in the summer. “It’s too hot for me. We made this decision a few years ago.”
