The far right infiltrates the German security forces

Date:

They identify 327 police, military and intelligence agents of the neo-Nazi ideology

Germany’s far-right is infiltrating the country’s security forces. An official report on the presence of right-wing extremists in the police, the Federal Body for the Defense of the Constitution (BfV) and the Bundeswehr, the federal army, shows that in the past three years there have been 327 cases of people with unconstitutional targets. The figure is 10 times higher than that of the cases registered in 2020, when the first study was prepared, also commissioned by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The report will be presented this Friday at a press conference by the head of that portfolio and the chairman of the BfV, Thomas Haldenwang, responsible for counter-terrorism and counterintelligence. The report targets members of these three security forces with a neo-Nazi ideology, as well as the so-called “Reichsbürger” or citizens of the Reich and those described as “self-managed”. In these last two cases, it is people, including from the far right, who fail to recognize the authority and legality of the state to the point of some declaring their territorial independence.

However, the document, announced by several German media outlets, emphasizes that the sharp increase in cases from one report to another is due to the fact that the investigation into the presence of the far right in the security forces has deepened and cases have come to the fore. the light that had been hidden for years. But “even greater awareness of the issue of extremism within the ranks itself” has also fueled greater determination from those responsible for fighting it within the security forces. The most common extremist activity is participation in neo-Nazi forums to exchange messages via mobile phones and to belong to or support extremist organizations under surveillance by the security forces. Crimes of political and ethnic motives, in the case of expressions for people of migrant origin, or religious against Jews or Muslims, also appear on the list of crimes attributed to far-right uniforms.

7% of the cases registered by the federal bodies and 5% of the observers by the regions refer to «violent orientation activities». Half of the suspects acted individually and the other half collectively. “When several people participate, the vast majority of those involved belonged to the same agency or other public services,” the official report points out. Those responsible for the investigation also analyzed for the first time the possible existence of far-right networks within the security forces and found that 201 officials have “clear connections” to these types of groups. Those in charge of the Federal Body for the Defense of the Constitution pointed out that, through these networks, these soldiers had direct contact with another 765 right-wing extremists registered by the security forces. Forums via chat from neo-Nazi formations such as the German National Democratic Party (NPD) or The Right, as well as ultra-movements such as “The Third Way”, an obvious allusion to Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich.
