The EU provides another 500 million military aid to Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has again demanded from Russian President Vladimir Putin an immediate end to the offensive and invasive war in Ukraine during a telephone call this morning. Scholz reported on Twitter that he made it clear during the conversation that Russia is responsible for the critical food situation in large parts of the planet as a result of the war, with famine in several regions. Putin, however, does not seem to give in to pressure from his Western interlocutors. The Russian president reiterated his claim that the peace talks between Moscow and Kiev are being blocked by Ukraine, according to Russian media. Putin assured in his conversation with Scholz that “fighters of the Nazi ideology are blatantly violating the norms of international law” on the Ukrainian side.
The European Union today announced new aid to Ukraine for its defense against Russian aggression amounting to EUR 500 million, which will be fully allocated to military equipment and equipment. This was announced by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, during the meeting of foreign ministers of the G7 to be held in the German tourist town of Weissenhäuser Strand, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. With this new contribution, EU aid to Ukraine for military purposes now amounts to EUR 2,000 million. Borrell explained that the aim of the new funds will be to boost Ukraine’s rearmament, this time with the purchase of heavy weapons, artillery and tanks to better face the Russian invasion. With the funds provided by Brussels, Ukraine was mainly provided with protective equipment and defensive weapons for the soldiers, as well as fuel for their vehicles. The latest EU military aid package to the Kiev authorities, also worth 500 million, was approved in mid-April.
The new military aid comes from the European Peace Support Fund, a new EU funding instrument that can also be used to improve the capabilities of the armed forces of the different Member States. The fund has a budget of 5,000 million euros until 2027, of which Germany contributes a quarter. At their meeting in Northern Germany, the G7 foreign ministers reiterated their solidarity with Ukraine and emphasized that it is very important at this time to continue to exert pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, “by giving more weapons to Ukraine.” to deliver and even emphasize plus the sanctions, said British head Liz Truss, noting that in the current crisis unity within the G7 is “key to defending freedom and democracy”. His French colleague, Jean Yves Le Drian, speaking in similar terms, assured that the G7 countries are “strongly united” in their decision to support Ukraine’s struggle for its long-term sovereignty and to victory!
The head of British diplomacy also announced her country’s new sanctions against people from Putin’s inner circle, including his ex-wife Ludmila Ocheretnaya and other family members. They serve the Russian president as front men and women to hide his personal fortune, the minister said, emphasizing that Putin secretly fattens that fortune thanks to a group of “friends, family and elites” while his official wealth appears modest. Among the sanctioned individuals is also the apparent lover of the Russian president, former sports gymnast Alina Kabayeva, with whom he has had at least two sons. The cousins of Russian President Igor Putin and Mikhail Schelomov are also on the British government’s blacklist.
