Israeli police have charged those attending the funeral of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the head while reporting an Israeli military raid on the occupied West Bank.
The body of the veteran Al Jazeera journalist, 51, left Jerusalem around 2:00 PM (11 GMT) in a coffin at Saint Joseph Hospital, in occupied East Jerusalem, to begin the funeral procession to the church Melkite Greek Catholic Church of the Old City and then to the cemetery, with the presence of thousands of people.
Israeli police have charged aides who wanted to carry the coffin on their shoulders wrapped in the Palestinian flag, a sign that cannot be displayed in Israel.
The Palestinian Red Crescent has reported that it has treated dozens of injured people around the hospital.
Later, Shireen’s body arrived in a van at the Yafa Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City, where she was taken to the church where the mass was taking place, with hundreds in attendance and a strong security force throughout the city.
There, police also denounced the crowd and aides waving Palestinian flags and singing mourning songs. They mainly attacked those carrying the coffin, who tried to keep it upright, although the attacks nearly knocked the coffin to the ground.
Akleh, 51, died Wednesday of a bullet to the head while covering an Israeli attack on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, a death blamed on Israel by his media, the Palestinian National Authority and the Arab League.
Israel and the PA are conducting two parallel investigations to determine who fired the bullet that killed her, as Palestinian gunmen also fired during the incidents, initially accusing Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Benet of death, although the government later qualified that version.
The autopsy did not clarify who was responsible for his death.
