A bike ride from Attersee to Altaussee almost ended in tragedy for a family of five from Germany. The youngest son slipped on his bicycle and fell into a stream. His father wanted to save him and that had painful consequences.

The family of five from Lower Bavaria made a mountain bike tour around 8 a.m. on Thursday from Lake Attersee via Rettenbachalm and Blaa-Alm in Ausseerland to Altaussee. The three children aged 11, 12 and 15 rode in front and their parents aged 41 and 33 in the back. When crossing a traceless bridge over the Rettenbach then the accident.

Boy lost consciousness
The 11-year-old lost control of his e-bike on the very wet and slippery wooden surface, fell to the right and fell about three meters into the Rettenbach. He hit his head against a rock, lost consciousness for a short time and was dragged into the heavily watered stream. The 41-year-old father reacted with presence of mind. He tried to get to his son as quickly as possible and ran into the woods towards Rettenbach.

Father hurts his ankle
However, he twisted his ankle and seriously injured his right foot. Despite the injury, he continued to try to help his son and managed to pull him out of the water at a shallower point about 100 yards downstream from the accident site. The mother had already notified the emergency services.

The Bad Ischl mountain rescue service went to the scene of the accident with eight men and cared for the patients. The crew of the ambulance helicopter was also called to help. The two patients were rescued from the premises by dew rescue and then taken to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Bad Ischl.
