Dutch customs investigators have seized more than 8,000 kilos of cocaine worth around 600 million euros in the port of Rotterdam. It was the largest shipment of drugs ever intercepted at the port, prosecutors said Thursday.
The drugs were reportedly hidden in a container of bananas that came from Ecuador. The Rotterdam public prosecutor’s office reported on X (formerly Twitter) that there were more than 8,000 packages of cocaine each.
Drugs were discovered as early as July
By mid-July, the detectives had already discovered the drugs. However, due to ongoing research, the find has only just been announced. The largest amount of cocaine ever seized in a container by investigators was about 4,600 kilograms in 2005.
According to the customs detectives, large loads of cocaine are becoming increasingly rare. Particularly in recent months, much smaller quantities have been seized. Detectives estimate that they intercept 50 to 60 percent of the smuggled drugs in the port of Rotterdam.
Last year, 47 tons of drugs were seized
Rotterdam is one of the most important import ports for drugs in Europe. Last year, some 47,000 kilos of drugs were seized in Europe’s largest port.
