Bridge closed again – Kremlin: Ukraine attacks annexed Crimea

According to Russian information, Kiev attacked the Moscow-annexed Black Sea peninsula of Crimea with 20 drones on Saturday evening.

“The thwarted terrorist attack claimed no casualties and caused no damage,” the defense ministry said, according to a report by Russia’s state news agency TASS on Saturday morning.An adviser to the Russian-installed governor of Crimea annexed in 2014 said air defense systems in different parts of the peninsula were involved in repelling airstrikes. Crimean traffic authorities said on Telegram that traffic on the Crimean Bridge was interrupted for about two hours from 1:30 a.m. (local time).

The bridge is not only a prestige project for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who personally opened it in 2018. It is also extremely important for supplying Russian troops in southern Ukraine, as it connects Crimea to Russia’s Krasnodar Oblast and thus to mainland Russia. During the war against Ukraine that Russia started on February 24, 2022, the bridge has been attacked several times and in some cases severely damaged.

More and more attacks in Russia
Drone attacks, including on Russian territory far inland, have increased since a drone was destroyed over the Moscow Kremlin in early May. At the beginning of August, a business district in the Russian capital was attacked twice within three days. Drone attacks are also reported repeatedly from Crimea. The target of the latest attack initially remained open. The Russian Black Sea Fleet is based in Crimea and its main base has been Sevastopol since the 18th century. Ukraine has repeatedly stated that its goal is to regain control of all occupied territories – including Crimea.

Deadly attack on Kharkov
According to Ukrainian sources, a woman was killed in a Russian attack on the Kharkiv region (oblast). The village of Kupyansk-Vuslovyj in Kupyansk district was shelled on Saturday morning, the governor of northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast, Oleh Synehubov, told the Telegram short message service. “A residential building has been damaged. A 73-year-old woman died.” The eastern parts of Kharkiv border directly on the front line, where the Ukrainian army has reported an increase in Russian attacks in recent weeks.

The regional authorities have already announced that they will evacuate civilians from the towns closest to the frontline in the Koupyansk district. Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians. Thousands of people died in the 18-month war. Millions of Ukrainians had to leave their homes, many fled abroad. Numerous cities and towns in Ukraine were destroyed.
