On Wednesday night, a larger group of Russian drones entered the Danube estuary area.
The drones were heading for the Danube river ports of Izmail and Reni, the Ukrainian Air Force said. The two port cities near the Romanian border are used for Ukrainian grain exports.
Residents reported on social media that air defense systems had been set up near the two ports. The governor of the southern region of Odessa, Oleh Kiper, asked the people of Izmail district to go to safety around 1:30 am. The alarm was canceled an hour later.
Grain deal suspended
Since Russia suspended the grain deal that allowed safe export of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea, transportation from the two ports across the Danube has become the main export route for Ukrainian grain. From Izmail and Reni, the Ukrainian grain is shipped by barge to the Romanian port of Constanta and further transported from there.
Advance of Russian troops
In view of the advance of Russian troops in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, the Ukrainian army has moved reserves to the Kupyansk sector. “Positions were reinforced, certain methodological recommendations were made and reserves were moved,” Army Group East spokesman Serhiy Cherevatyy told Ukrainian news television on Tuesday. This prevents further advance of the enemy.
According to Ukrainian and Russian military observers, the Russian army has advanced to about seven kilometers from the city of Kuyansk. Local authorities have also already ordered an evacuation of civilians around the city. Kuyansk was only liberated from Russian occupation last year as part of a successful Ukrainian counter-offensive in the Kharkov region.
Another drone strike in Russia
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense reports that three more drones have been shot down. Kaluga Oblast, which borders the city of Moscow, was attacked.
According to the ministry, a terrorist attack was thwarted around 5 a.m. (local time). The Kremlin again suspects Kiev is behind the attack. However, this information cannot be independently verified. Nothing is known about damage or injuries.
Against the background of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine, military attacks and acts of sabotage are now increasingly taking place in the Russian border areas with Ukraine and to a lesser extent in other parts of Russia, including the capital Moscow.
