With 26 refugees, some of whom were minors, a smuggler ran away from the police near Ilz (Styria) on Sunday. The escape of the white pickup took 60 kilometers – and at 180 km / h, as it has now become known. The Swedish smuggler with Syrian roots endangered many road users. Police are now looking for these witnesses.
A patrol of the foreigners police wanted to check the white Mercedes Sprinter around 9.30 am last Sunday. But the man stepped on the accelerator and raced in an extremely risky way and with daring overtaking maneuvers about 60 kilometers on the southern autobahn towards Graz or Klagenfurt.
In some cases, the towing vehicle even overtook on the right side of the hard shoulder, endangering not only other road users, but also the 26 illegally towed persons in the fully occupied hold of the rented van with German registration plates. According to the Söding fire brigade, they were dehydrated but otherwise unharmed.
Looking for witnesses to the crazy journey
A patrol car parked across the street was able to stop the driver after a chase of about 30 minutes on the approach road Mooskirchen. The police are now looking for witnesses to the risky escape.
You must report to the Ilz-FGP police inspection between 07:00 and 19:00 (tel. 059133/6224-200).
