Evacuations en route – Hundreds of Canadians have been forced to flee because of wildfires

Date:

Several hundred people had to be evacuated by military aircraft due to 230 active fires in Canada’s Northwest Territories. A state of emergency was also declared.

We are in a crisis situation and our government is using all available resources to help,” Northwest Territories Environment Minister Shane Thompson said Tuesday. The affected villages, which are several miles apart, are “particularly difficult” to evacuate by land, said Mike Westwick of the local fire department.

120 soldiers also help with the evacuations. So far, 168,000 people in Canada have had to leave their homes this year because of the many wildfires. Four people have died so far.

Strong winds make extinguishing work more difficult
The evacuation of 6,000 people has been ordered in the Northwest Territories. Strong winds in some areas forced firefighters to retreat.

“It breaks my heart when I think of the people of the Northwest Territories struggling with devastating wildfires,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on the X online service, formerly known as Twitter.
