In Ireland, residents have tried to take advantage of technical problems at a bank. Many customers were able to withdraw more money from ATMs than their account balance allowed. This led to long queues and the police sometimes intervened to prevent write-offs.
The Bank of Ireland apologized for the technical glitch on Wednesday.
On Tuesday evening and well into the night, customers lined up at the ATMs of the commercial bank. In some places the police intervened. The fault was resolved on Wednesday.
Bank warned customers
In online media it was said that customers could have withdrawn 1000 euros without credit in the account. The bank warned on Wednesday that all payments would also be passed on – some customers could go into the red and then have to pay high overdraft interest.
Brendan Burgess, founder of consumer portal AskAboutMoney.com, told broadcaster RTE that the Bank of Ireland urgently needs to upgrade its “clumsy” IT system. However, he also said: “If you know you have no money and you withdraw £1,000 then that’s not the Bank of Ireland’s problem.”
The Bank of Ireland said it would monitor the effects of the outage. She had already penalized the bank for vulnerabilities in the IT system in the past.
