After an uphill battle, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gets the Western fighter jets he has been asking for for months: after giving the green light to the American manufacturer, the United States, the Danes and Dutch have agreed to be the first operational states to equip the Ukrainian Air Force out with F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. But what is so special about the fighter jet? And why is it so immensely important to Ukraine? An analysis.
The slow progress in the reconquest of occupied territories and the high blood toll paid by the Ukrainians are the result of an unequal balance of power: the depleted Ukrainian air force still has a few fighter jets, but these are Soviet models from the manufacturers Sukhoi and Mikoyan-Gurevich (MiG ) – and they are based in Russia. Since it is not realistic to buy new aircraft or spare parts from the enemy, new suppliers are needed so that Kiev can repel Russian fighter jets and neutralize defensive positions and attack helicopters in the disputed areas. Despite being almost 40 years old, the F-16 is seen as the ideal weapon for this.
