Vortex in Italy – homophobic general becomes bestselling author

Date:

An Italian general who has done his best as a book writer is currently causing great outrage in his homeland. In the essay ‘Il mondo al contrario’ (Upside Down World), Roberto Vannacci lashes out at homosexuals, feminists and immigrants, among others. The book quickly became a bestseller.

The 54-year-old’s work was the best-selling book both in bookstores and online, the Roman daily ‘La Repubblica’ reported on Thursday. Vannacci even trumped the novel ‘Tre ciotole’ by the recently deceased author Michela Murgia, which dominated the bestseller list for weeks.

General: “Homosexuals are not normal”
The general, who previously served in Afghanistan and Iraq, writes in his book that homosexuals are not “normal”. He criticizes same-sex marriage and plans to introduce adoption rights for same-sex couples in Italy as well. The general also strongly criticizes surrogacy, which is banned in Italy.

Indignant reactions from left-wing politicians, silence from right-wingers
The remarks had sparked a wave of outrage from left-wing politicians, while right-wing and far-right MPs remained silent about the incident. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, a party friend of right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, announced disciplinary proceedings against the general on Thursday. The media are speculating that Vannacci could run for a seat in the European Parliament next year in the ranks of the right-wing governing Lega party.

For now, however, he has been dismissed as head of the Italian Military Geographical Institute. Vannacci defended himself on the television channel Rete4. He didn’t expect the storm of outrage for a book that “expresses my thoughts without offending anyone.”
