After the alleged death of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, Vladimir Putin, another ruler with whom Prigozhin recently had a heated argument, took the floor. Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov publicly mourned the death of the Russian mercenary leader. “His death is a great loss for the entire state,” Kadyrov wrote on his Telegram channel on Friday evening. He expressed his condolences to the family.
Kadyrov and Prigozhin were both involved in the Russian offensive war in Ukraine with troops under their command. They were united for a while in their criticism of the Russian military leadership, but eventually got into a serious argument.
“We Were Friends for a Long Time”
“We’ve been friends for a long time,” Kadyrov claimed two days after Prigozhin was believed to have been killed in a plane crash. He posted a photo on Telegram showing him receiving a medal from the Wagner mercenary group from Prigozhin’s hands.
Kadyrov touched on the conflict only in passing. In recent months, Prigozhin has lost sight of the big picture. “I have asked him to set aside his personal ambitions in favor of matters of the utmost importance to the state,” he wrote.
Putin’s henchmen and hardliners
Kadyrov and Prigozhin were both seen as hardliners and called for even tougher action from Moscow in Ukraine. However, many observers describe the alliance between the two as temporary, because their criticism of military leadership is mainly about gaining advantages for their own units.
In fact, the alliance ended when Prigozhin criticized Kadyrov’s Akhmad forces for never fighting on the front line. The Chechen units then threatened the Wagner boss with violence, among other things.
Prigozhin’s mutiny instigated in June promised to defeat Kadyrov “by harsh methods”. However, there was no conflict between the Wagner and Achmat units; Prigozhin himself called off the uprising.
