“Unplanned” – Putin will not come to Prigozhin’s funeral

Date:

Russian head of state Vladimir Putin will not attend the funeral of slain Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin. The fact that the disgraced warlord could be buried in the same cemetery as Putin’s parents is also causing a stir.

“The presence of the president is not foreseen,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday. He revealed that the Kremlin had no concrete information about Prigozhin’s funeral. “Such decisions are made by relatives or friends. Without them we can’t say anything,” said Peskow.

According to the Russian news site Fontanka, the former mercenary boss could pay his last respects today, Tuesday. He may be buried in the Russian northern metropolis of Saint Petersburg at the Serafimovsky cemetery. There are the graves of many notable Russian soldiers and officers. Interestingly, Putin’s parents were also buried there.

High security measures
Metal detectors have been installed at the Serafimovsky cemetery in recent days. In addition, there is a large police force on site and, according to Fontanka, security forces patrol the cemetery. Cleaners wash the asphalt, there are funeral tents on every corner.

Tragic plane crash
On August 23, a private corporate jet crashed over Russia’s Tver region. Ten people died: seven passengers and three crew members. In addition to Prigozhin, his deputy Dmitry Utkin was also on board. Initially, there was much speculation as to whether the Wagner boss was actually among the dead. On Sunday, the Commission of Inquiry announced that all the deceased had been identified as part of a molecular genetic study. They therefore agree with the passenger list.
