Thousands of migrants are currently being detained every week in Austria. 80 percent of seizures take place in Burgenland. “The majority of the migrants are on their way to Austria with smugglers,” explains the head of the Central Office for Combating Smuggling Crime, Gerald Tatzgern, in an interview with Jana Pasching. Some of the refugees are aware of the danger they are exposing themselves to, others are not. “Some even refuse to enter. Then they help with violence, such as wooden clubs or iron bars.”
People would be crammed into trucks. “Many of them believe that water or seats are ready,” says Tatzgern. By the time they realize the reality is different, it’s usually too late: “Some knock and shout, but the driver is told not to stop.”
More than 100,000 refugees have already come to Italy this year
There is currently a lot of movement in the refugee flow. The numbers alone would speak for themselves, says Tatzgern. “Last year, about 50,000 migrants came to Italy via the Mediterranean. This year in the same period there were more than 100,000.”
Strong migratory pressure
You see that many people want to leave Afghanistan. “There are already more than five million Afghans in Iran. Very many Afghans come from Iran, to Turkey and Istanbul. Then we are talking again about organized smuggling in the Western Balkans, to Europe, to Austria.” According to Tatzgern, migratory pressure is currently very high. As an example, the expert mentioned the revolution in Niger, which plays a major role in the migration route of all African countries. “We are monitoring this closely to potentially work even more closely with the North African states, to the best of our knowledge and belief.”
