The Russian Air Force is now apparently preparing its bombers with old car tires to increase protection against drone strikes. A debate has erupted on the internet about whether this is fake news or a new strategy by the attackers in Ukraine.
“The Russians have once again demonstrated their unprecedented capacity for innovation,” said Twitter user Tatarigami, a Ukrainian reserve officer. “You see a satellite image of a strategic bomber TU-95 covered with car tires. According to the Russians, this is to protect strategic bombers against drones.”
This strategy is surprising, however, as car tires can become extremely hot and even overheat. In the worst case, they catch fire and burn for hours.
Record credibly? “A few more examples are needed”
Users are now discussing whether the numerous Twitter messages are fake news (false messages). “We need a few more samples,” said one user. “Otherwise it could be a stress test performed regularly after a certain flight time and/or after repairs.”
Again and again drone attacks
Recently, there have been repeated heavy drone attacks on Russian airfields, destroying bombers and cargo planes. For example, on August 30, the Russian airport of Pskov in the city of the same name in the northwest of the country was attacked by “ten to twenty” drones. Among other things, transport aircraft of the Ilyushin Il-76 type are stationed there, which are deployed by pilots of the 76th Guards Air Assault Division of the Russian army.
Video: According to Moscow, three Ukrainian naval drones have been intercepted
According to residents, explosions, gunfire and sirens were heard and a large fire broke out. Four cargo planes were said to have been destroyed, while Moscow said the attack had been repelled.
A drone was also launched that would go to the Russian capital Moscow. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said there was no damage or injuries. According to the Kremlin, three more Ukrainian UAVs were dropped over the southwestern border area of Bryansk.
Earlier on Wednesday evening – without explanation – air traffic at Moscow airports was again temporarily interrupted. Drone attacks on Russian territory are increasing and Moscow is also increasingly being targeted.
Airports in Moscow closed due to drones
On Monday night, Russia had to fend off several drone attacks in Ukraine: air traffic at the two airports Domodedovo and Vnukovo was temporarily suspended – after a “drone flying towards Moscow” was destroyed in the Lyubertsy district. Two planes were also shot down near the Bryansk region on the border with Ukraine.
