Mud in Nevada – Visitors try to leave the festival on foot

Date:

Tens of thousands of festival-goers are still trapped in the mud in the Nevada desert (USA). Some are now trying to leave the site on foot. Police had already blocked access on Friday due to heavy rain.

As reported, one person was killed. On Sunday (local time), authorities asked people to stay at the huge event site in Black Rock City for the time being. Actually, the ‘Burning Man’ festival was supposed to end on Monday, but it was feared that the entrance and exit routes could be blocked until Tuesday or Wednesday. The location is more than ten kilometers from the nearest residential buildings.

On Sunday morning, police said “just over 70,000 people” were trapped in Black Rock City. However, despite the ban, some visitors have attempted to return to civilization on foot. Others resigned themselves to the situation. “I am a surgeon and actually have to work on Tuesday. But it is slowly becoming clear to me that this will not be possible,” said a doctor who had traveled from California. “The patients need me, but I can’t do anything.”

On platform X (formerly Twitter), festival visitors nevertheless reported a good atmosphere, plenty of food and water. Many slept in cars because of the wet tents. Photos and videos of mud, stuck vehicles, dirty clothes, as well as people dancing were posted on social networks.

Here’s a tweet from a festival goer.

Blockade of climate activists
The Burning Man Festival is held annually and started on August 27 this year. The trademark and namesake of the event is the burning of a wooden statue about twelve meters high. Despite initial skepticism, it was set on fire as planned on Sunday night. According to their own statements, some people have already managed to leave the festival, including American actors Chris Rock and DJ Diplo.

At the start of the festival, climate activists blocked a street and demanded, among other things, a ban on single-use plastic. Some of them were arrested and some accused the police of using them disproportionately.

The festival bills itself as an event somewhere between a counterculture celebration and a spiritual retreat. From its small beginnings, Burning Man has grown over the years into a well-organized mass event. The annual budget is almost 45 million dollars (which amounts to about 42 million euros). Last year, 75,000 people took part.
