Hundreds of migrants have arrived on the southern Italian island of Lampedusa in the past 24 hours. The recording system is increasingly under pressure.
According to the authorities, 130 migrants arrived aboard four boats on Tuesday evening. Seven boats carrying 279 migrants arrived on the island on Monday, carrying groups of 21 to 50 people, including women and minors. The asylum seekers said they had left Shebba and Sfax in Tunisia.
Some of those who have arrived have already been taken to Sicily and authorities say there are currently 388 people in the Lampedusa hotspot. Since the beginning of the year, the number of migrants arriving by sea on Italy’s southern coast has increased significantly, putting pressure on the reception system.
According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior in Rome, last updated on Monday, 114,844 people have arrived by sea so far in 2023, including 10,272 minors. In the same period of the previous year there were 61,483 and in 2021 39,733. Most migrants come from Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Tunisia and Egypt.
