The Ministry of Education now wants to increase the number of career changers in addition to school as a kindergarten teacher. According to Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP), the ‘Class Job’ campaign will be expanded.
“In this way we will ensure in the short, medium and long term that enough teachers are available in Austrian kindergartens,” Polaschek assured on Thursday. Kindergarten teachers are regularly trained at the Federal Educational Institute for Primary Education (Bafep). the five-year forms with a high school diploma or in adult colleges.
More options for further education
Since 2021, people with a relevant previous education can continue their education at teacher training colleges (PH), recently even Bachelor’s students from all disciplines. From this fall, there is also a special offer for graduates of social pedagogy educational institutions: with a two-semester course at Bafeps, they can expand their qualifications with “basic pedagogical knowledge” and then work in kindergartens.
In addition, the advanced training for graduates of secondary vocational schools – mainly technical schools for social professions or for teaching assistant professions – which had previously been piloted, was transferred to the mainstream school system. This training is concluded with a maturity and diploma exam and is therefore equivalent to a regular Bafep diploma.
According to reports, money from the additional 4.5 billion euros announced by Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) for childcare will be used for the various training courses.
