Handbrake released – sweeper slid 95 meters into the depth

Date:

While cleaning a sweeper, a 40-year-old worker released the vehicle’s handbrake, causing the vehicle to roll, break through a wooden fence, overturn and slide down a slope.

The 40-year-old from the Völkermarkt district (Carinthia) was able to jump out of the driver’s cab just in time before the sweeper slid about 95 meters over a slope. At around 3 p.m., he parked the vehicle in an alternative parking lot on the B70 Packer national road in the Griffen municipality and cleaned it with a high-pressure cleaner. “This activity is performed several times a day to keep the vehicle operational,” it explains.

The sweeper suddenly began to roll
The worker actually only wanted to move the machine forward a meter – he released the handbrake to do so. It probably hadn’t occurred to him that the multi-ton vehicle would be able to drive independently on the sloping parking lot. “The sweeper rolled forward on the sloping parking lot so quickly that the man was unable to apply the handbrake to stop the vehicle,” police said.

Jumped out in time
He jumped out of the vehicle, which broke through a wooden fence seconds later, overturned and slid down a ramp for about 300 feet before coming to rest on its side. Although no one was injured in the incident, the car was a total loss.
