Second time in a row: activists again blocked the highway in The Hague

Date:

In The Hague, climate activists again blocked a highway near parliament and the government district on Sunday. In doing so, they stuck to their own announcement that they wanted to protest daily from now on.

Just on Saturday, police arrested around 2,400 supporters of the group Extinction Rebellion (XR) during a similar traffic blockade on the A12 (see video above). They were taken by bus to the stadium of the ADO football club, but almost all were released. Criminal proceedings were opened against only a few.

According to its own statements, the group wants to block the A12 every day until government subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are abolished in the Netherlands. On Sunday it happened for the second time in a row: the police again used water cannons against the group and arrested participants. A little later on Sunday she announced on X (formerly Twitter) that she had removed all activists from the highway.

Here you see a tweet from the police in The Hague.

The Hague mayor Jan van Zanen had agreed to the mandatory evacuation of the section of the highway. “Many people will have to return to work tomorrow (Monday, take note) along this important access route. “I remain committed to combating disruptive blockades in the city,” the Dutch media said.

The demonstrators had previously resisted calls to clear the streets and express their protest against energy policy in places in the city. Other climate activists in The Hague took advantage of this opportunity on both Saturday and Sunday. The demonstrations there were unhindered and permitted.
