Gun help? – Kremlin confirms planned meeting with Kim Jong-un

Date:

The Kremlin has confirmed a planned meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Russia. There had been similar reports before. Mutual arms assistance should be on the agenda, among other things.

At Putin’s invitation, Kim will make an official visit to Russia in the coming days, the Kremlin announced on its website on Monday. Kim is apparently already on his way to the meeting with Putin by train. The North Korean ruler travels in a special armored train to the northeast of his country, where North Korea shares a relatively short stretch of border with Russia.

The planned conversation will probably be about arms supplies. North Korea could supply Russia with artillery ammunition and anti-tank missiles for the war in Ukraine. In return, the largely isolated, heavily armed but poor country could receive modern satellite and nuclear submarine technology from Russia.

Further insulation?
The US government said last week that negotiations between the two countries are making progress. US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke of a big mistake. For North Korea and Russia, such an exchange of weapons and technology would mean further isolation, she said. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan threatened that North Korea would pay a price within the international community if it supplied Russia with weapons.

Kim’s trip to Russia is his first trip abroad in more than four years. He last traveled to Vladivostok in 2019 and met Putin for their first summit after nuclear disarmament talks with then US President Donald Trump collapsed. Vladivostok is located on Russia’s Pacific coast and only 130 kilometers from the border with North Korea. This time the meeting will take place there again.
