Date:

On Tuesday, a keeper (33) was found dead in the rhino enclosure at Hellbrunn Zoo in Salzburg. The animal probably trampled the woman to death and another caregiver (34) was also seriously injured. The incident was not the first fatality in domestic zoos.

Ben 13. June 1991 For example, a caretaker in the former safari park Gänserndorf (Lower Austria) was attacked and fatally injured by a tiger in the predator enclosure. The man’s body was found about ten meters from his car. The keeper had gotten out of his car earlier in the enclosure, violating zoo rules.

Ben March 5, 2002 A worker died after being bitten on the neck by a jaguar at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo while preparing food. The zoo’s then director, Helmut Pechlaner, was bitten on the hand and injured when he tried to save the woman. It later turned out that the woman had forgotten to close the doors between the box area and the fence.

Ben February 20, 2005 The 1,600 kilo, four-year-old bull elephant ‘Abu’ rammed a keeper at Vienna’s Schönbrunn zoo. He was just taking his morning shower when the animal’s tusks rammed him into the chest and stomach. He suffered an open skull fracture. The man was considered at the time “one of the best and most experienced elephant trainers in Europe,” the zoo said. The elephant house will then remain closed for a week. The police investigation shows that the incident was unforeseeable.

The chronology makes no claim to completeness.
