Two dead excavator drivers, three houses uninhabitable: this is the dramatic outcome after a rock fall in the Steyr district of Unterhimmel in February. The residents have now been informed about what to do next; returning to their homes is not yet an option.
“The crack in the conglomerate rock is stable, but extensive work is still needed to secure the slope,” geologist Günter Moser said at an information event for affected residents. After the landslide in February, they had to leave their homes on Rosenegger Strasse and were housed in alternative apartments.
Two houses will be demolished
It is now clear that the owners of two homes cannot return; Replacement discussions are being held with them. In order to build the protective wall recommended by the geologist, the two buildings must be demolished. However, an apartment building that is currently closed should become habitable again once the work is completed.
The work will last a year
Rosenegger Straße cannot be restored either; this area is needed as a fall space for any falling rocks. The first step is currently securing the slope behind two occupied houses. The work is expected to last at least another year.
