Once again, gruesome images from a pigsty in the St. Pölten district are causing horror. The mutilated and bloodied animals on fully slatted floors brought activists from the Association Against Animal Factories to the scene. Now things are moving.
Dead and injured animals with open wounds and mutilations: Even a year after the ban on fully slatted floors in pig farming, a manure farm in the St. Pölten district is appealing to animal rights activists. The latest recordings from the Association Against Animal Factories (VGT) make the full extent clear.
Inflamed eyes and even a ruptured intestine
The list of injuries ranges from a bruised mother pig, long claws, inflamed eyes and bloody ears to a ruptured intestine. “It is more than clear that these pigs suffer enormously from being kept on fully slatted floors! If they had straw available as bedding and suitable employment for the species, the animals would be much better off,” says David Richter of the Association Against Animal Factories.
Injured AMA pigs
According to VGT, despite the ban, the Lower Austrian AMA quality stable still keeps approximately 1000 animals on completely concrete slatted floors! Emaciated and injured, they live their tragic lives here. Strippers, open abscesses and completely inappropriate behavior are the order of the day here. “There was even a dead pig in one bay,” Richter said. She was even bitten by the other animals. That is why the animal rights activists filed a complaint.
Scandalous conditions on manure farms
For years, the VGT has never tired of exposing scandalous conditions at manure farms. Not without reason: “The fully slatted floor in particular is a central reason for the species-unfriendly keeping of pigs in Austria,” say animal rights activists. The VGT’s efforts led to a legal ban in July 2022, but this will not come into effect until 2040. But the industry continues to resist!
According to information from “Krone”, a check on Monday morning should bring more movement into the case. The VGT’s dramatic recordings of the farm in question in the St. Pölten district show that the animals have not even been treated. Injured, bleeding and sick animals were also not separated.
