The Ukrainian army is slowly but surely making up ground in its counter-offensive in the south of the country. Russian troops there are coming under increasing pressure. According to British military experts, the Russian army leadership has therefore reinforced besieged units with airborne troops in order to relieve them.
At least five regiments have been massed at the front within a few kilometers of the village of Robotyne, according to the Ministry of Defense’s daily intelligence report on the war in Ukraine on Monday. “At full strength, such a unit should consist of about 10,000 elite paratroopers. “Almost all units are most likely dramatically understaffed,” the Ministry of Defense statement in London said.
The stakes displease superiors
According to the British, the use of elite soldiers to strengthen the front line is likely to displease their superiors. “Throughout the war, Russian commanders sought to re-establish airborne forces as a highly mobile force for offensive operations.” Now the paratroopers would be redeployed as foot soldiers to reinforce overstretched ground forces, the statement continued.
At Robotyne, the Ukrainians had previously broken through a mine-laden and fortified Russian defense line. During their advance into the Sea of Azov last week, Ukrainian forces were able to capture 5.2 square kilometers of territory. In total, Ukrainian forces say they have recaptured more than 160 square miles in the south as part of their counter-offensive, which has been going on for three months.
Heavy battle in the East
Further territory was also recaptured on the Eastern Front. Last week, Ukrainian soldiers took control of two square kilometers of land around the city of Bakhmut, which was captured by Russian forces in May after months of fighting, the Defense Ministry announced Monday. A total of 51 square kilometers near Bakhmut have been liberated since the start of the counter-offensive. In the Donetsk region, Ukrainian forces continue to fend off a Russian offensive against the cities of Avdiivka and Mariinka.
The counter-offensive continues around the recently liberated city of Klishchiivka in the east of the country. “The armed forces are continuing their offensive operations in the vicinity of Klishchiivka,” the Ukrainian General Staff said on Monday morning. Inflict significant losses on the enemy and consolidate new positions. The Russians also tried in vain to break through the Ukrainian defense line around the city of Andriyivka, Kiev said.
Deaths from drone strikes
According to Ukrainian reports, two people were killed in overnight drone strikes in the region south of Kherson. Another four people were injured in the attack on the town of Beryl, the region’s governor Olexandr Prokudin said. According to local governor Ole Kipper, the district around the Danube port of Izmail was also the target of attacks.
Eleven drones were shot down and a recreation center in the small town of Wylkowe was hit. Ukraine’s air force said 18 of 24 threats had been shot down in different parts of the country and 17 cruise missiles had also been repelled.
