Nowotny explains that new variants of the coronavirus are likely to emerge, but they are expected to be less dangerous than previous variants. Severe disease courses would mainly occur in the elderly and people with previous illnesses. “We will still have a problem in hospitals and also in elderly and nursing homes,” says the virologist. “We will see more infections and there will certainly be infections where people become very ill and have to go on sick leave.”
