A police officer in England has been fired without notice for kicking a man in the head who had already been wrestled to the ground. The dismissal was ordered after an investigation into the case by the independent police watchdog IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct), the authority announced on Thursday.
The incident took place in Bradford near Leeds in December 2021. When he was arrested, the officer allegedly held the man down with the sole of his boot while he was already on the ground and being held down by two officers. The authorities considered this serious misconduct.
The police station initially only wanted to warn the police officers
Following a complaint from the arrested man, the responsible police authority, West Yorkshire Police, initially only initiated disciplinary proceedings with the maximum penalty being a written warning. The IOPC considered this insufficient. Officials are required to use only as much force as is absolutely necessary, it said in a statement about the decision.
