US President Joe Biden has set up a new office in the White House intended to prevent gun violence. Vice President Kamala Harris will chair the meeting, he said on Thursday (local time). There would need to be controls and a ban on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines.
He said he would “continue to urge Congress to take common-sense measures that the majority of Americans support.” Because there have been too few such measures so far, he established the new office. This is to work with the government and do everything we can “to combat the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing apart our families, our communities and our country.”
The new office will help implement existing gun safety laws and work with states. In no other industrialized country is the risk of dying from everyday activities as high as in the US. For example, people have been shot while shopping or shot because they stood wrong at the door.
